STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

WHEREAS:
  • The culture of Sierra County is highly identified worldwide with gold minning.
  • Important and true remmants of our culture are revealed and propagated by retaining mining buildings and artifacts.
  • Significant mining buildings, portals, and evirons have been destroyed of late (at the Telegraph and Brush Creek mines) by the U.S. Forest Service.
  • No successful cultures purposefully destroy their own heritage and destroying mining buildings and artifacts is a known way to erode our culture.
  • To the extent that we catalogue each and every remmant of both working and not working mining buildings on U.S. Forest Service land and unpatented land is the extent to which we maximize the probability that said buildings are saved.
  • Said buildings and artifacts have considerable potential economic development value to future generations.
  • Our mining culture is already tenous and needs support.
  • We believe that the United States Forest Service is willing to work cooperatively in this important and necessary effort.
  • Eliminating these buildings would be an act of irreversible loss.
  • We believe that an important part of our cultural heritage is of hard work, a pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit, of risk, of hope, and of gold fever. These qualities are communicated and therefore passed on to future generations by discovering and experiencing these environments.
