There were many Freight and Pack trains in Sierra County
pre-1900. The Langton Brothers of which there were three, appear on the census of 1852.
|
The entries on the census of 1852, named J.W. Langton (aged 22 years old), J.W. Langton (aged 18 years old), and A.T. Langton (aged 25 years old).
The Langton brothers started a company, they named, the Pioneer Express and Passenger Train Company. This company had
offices in Goodyears Bar, Foster Bar, and Downieville. There were no roads, just trails which
were known by most people of the area. Most of the goods, and freight had to be packed in by hardy mule trains. One either walked or rode a pack mule.
Horse(s) while being faster, were not up to the very steep trails. Horse(s) were not as smart as mule(s) and more prone to breaking a leg or comming
up lame. Crossing streams or rivers was equally dangerous to both animals and humans. In later years, the Pioneer Stage Line also had contracts for the route between
Virginia City and San Francisco . The Wells Fargo Express Company was
established in Goodyears Bar in 1858 with Mr. John D. Selen as the
first agent. A Tole Road between Downieville and Goodyears Bar ,which cut
the time between the two towns, was completed on July 4th, 1859. This road was known as the
Sierra Turnpike.
