The Native Americans were in Sierra County long before gold miners, hunters, or settlers
came. The American Indians hunted and lived a nomatic life. They lived off of the land. Many different tribes lived in
California. Pictured is a map of California showing the different Indian tribes in California.
The Maidu Indians were located north of Sacramento and extending up to about Susanville
or so. See pictured Map. The colored portion of the map is the range of the Maidu.
The Maidu Indians lived in Sierra County. They loved, worked, and died in
Sierra County. Their history in California is much longer and as important as that of the
Gold seeking miners, tradesman, and ,'women of the night' who followed them into Sierra County .
Indian baskets are pictured, courtesy of the owner, Mr. Chapman Native Americans used stones to grind their corn, maze,
and other ediable items between two rocks. There are many places in Sierra County where evidence of Indian grinding
rocks can be found. Pictured is an Native Indian grinding rock and stone pestle.
