In October of 1906, the anteroom in the front of present Goodyears Bar School House was built by J.C.Moore and Andrew Bachels. Mr. Lou Fortier split the shakes for the roof. The old droop-lap siding was put on by Mr. J.C.Moore of Downieville. The corrugatated iron roof which is still on the building was put on in 1915 and also on the woodshed.
During the late thirties, the windows on the north side of the building were covered over. Rumour has it that the cross light was not good for the children's eyes. In addition to all of this work, the kitchen was also added.
Mrs. Sidney Strand taught for the most years in this school house. The author attended this school sometime in the 1940's. Mrs. Strand taught with a very firm hand, and used a hand bell to draw the students attention when this was needed.
She would appoint one of the children to ring the bell in the morning. One of my fondest memories was on a cold winter day, Mrs. Strand would have a kettle of home-made soup on the oil stove for lunch. It sure tasted good.
Mrs. Ruth Turner who taught here in 1921, married Mr. Arthur Drury and lived here in Goodyears until 1988. The author and his family now live on the old Drury Ranch up Goodyears Creek.
This is a picture of Arthur Drury in his cabin on the Drury ranch sometime around the turn of the
last century.
In 1953, the school closed and the children were bussed to Downieville some four miles up the road. The building was given to the citizens of Goodyears Bar and vicinity. The school is now used by the
Goodyears Bar Community Club. It has now been so for over fourty years and is used for emergency and community activities
and for elections.
In 1995, the windows were replaced on the north and south sides of the Goodyears Bar Schoolhouse with new double paned glass. The work was expertly done by Rick Simi [general contractor] of Downieville. The kitchen was remodeled by the Goodyears Bar Community Club Members.
New cabinets, new plumbing, and insulation was installed or remodeled. In the early years of this school house, an outhouse, similar to the one shown, was in use. Today, this bathroom is inside the anteroom of the Goodyears Bar School house. Some improvements are just needed. The Goodyears Bar School House is still a great place to meet!
