Goodyears Bar in Sierra County, CA 95944
A main focus of the California Gold Rush of 1849 to 1856 was
Goodyears Bar. The very first miners who came to Sierra County Gold Country found gold deposits accumulated in (sand) bars where rivers or streams merged. Goodyears Bar is where the streams of Rock Creek, Woodruff Creek and Goodyears Creek meet the North Yuba River. The Goodyear Brothers Miles and Andrew are credited with founding Goodyears Bar. Several 'GOOD YEARS' of minning were had on the gold bearing BAR where the streams met. Major William Downie found deposits of gold where two rivers merged or 'forked'. Hence the name 'The Forks' which was the first name for 'Downieville', California'. This early example of California gold mining is part of the history of Sierra County, California, and Goodyears Bar.
Sierra County was formed from a part of Yuba County in 1852. California State Scenic Highway 49 runs thru Goodyears Bar
and Downieville. California Scenic Highway 49 is the historic route of the miners, camp followers, gold diggers, and tradesmen which followed the founders of Goodyears Bar and Downieville into Sierra County. These men and women were seeking gold and fortune in the California Gold Rush of 1849. The tall masted ships bringing people to California were burnt-up in the San Francisco harbor by their owners in the haste to come to Sierra County and find gold. It was said very few people remained in San Francisco, as most of the able bodied men were seeking gold in Downieville and Goodyears Bar, California. This passage of Californias history is truly part of California's Golden Era.
