Mark & Tammy Helm have lived in Sierra County for a number of years. They purchased the St Charles Hotel in 1994 and have made it into a Bed & Breakfast
(a dream come true) This historic building served as a main stagecoach stop between Nevada City and Downieville during
California's Gold Rush era. Currently Helm's St. Charles Inn offers four rooms to travelers. Each room's theme name comes
from a local gold mine.
Each room's decor is consistent with a local mine's theme. All rooms feature a private bath.

How to Get Here
Take I-80 north-east from Sacramento arriving
in Auburn, California. Turn north-west on Highway 49 towards Grass Valley
and Nevada City. Downieville is 49 miles north of Nevada City, California.
Goodyears Bar is 4 miles
south of Downieville ( before you arrive in Downieville). Downieville is the county seat of Sierra County. Goodyears Bar

A Brief History of the Helm's St Charles Inn

The only Hotel in Goodyears Bar that was rebuilt after the great fire of 1864, which left just a few buildings standing on the edge of town, was The St. Charles Hotel. Owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Fluke, this hotel had a dining room, bar, and dance hall. The Hotel was run successfully for many years into the late 1890's when it came up for auction after Mrs. Fluke's death. Pictured above is the Fluke Hotel in Goodyears Bar, CA. This is now the Helm's St. Charles Inn, a Bed and Breakfast, this Hotel is owned by Mark and Tammy Helm. |
| Paul Bachels who had long been desirous of going into the hotel management business, out-bid August Strand for the St Charles Hotel. The hotel was sold for $1084.80. Possesion to be taken immediately. The Bachels family ran this stopping place and hotel for many years. Before the new highway from Indian Valley on the North Side of the Yuba River was constructed in 1921, the St Charles Hotel must have been a very popular place. The main hall on the second story was turned into bedrooms of which there were 14. When Ida Bachels married Si Fisher, they made this hotel their home.
